Aubrey worked for the California State Park System for 25 years. He came into the department in 1969 when there were 467 employee's. That year the Department experienced changes, One part would become known as Visitor Services, which would be the part of the department that would have visitor contact; and the other part would become known simply as Maintenance. He opted to go with maintenance because the chances for promotion were better and faster and Aubrey was not a man that stood still. He started at San Clemente State Beach in the Department's lowest full time position and promoted up through the ranks faster and younger then anyone ever had at that time. When he reached the position that would allow him freedom in choices and still let him get out into the field he stopped and stayed in that position until the second reoccurrence of his brain tumor forced him into early retirement.
When Aubrey's accumulated sick leave pay was about to run out and his retirement money not effective yet a PERS official/friend requested permission to let his fellow employee's know what was happening. Aubrey was so well thought of in the State Park System that, as a result of that announcement, almost $19,000.00 was donated to a special fund in Aubrey's name. We received it as our monthly income for the next six months, until his PERS became effective. Those are the kinds of people that we were honored to know and that's the kind of man Aubrey was.
As a result of his work he not only worked in some unique places but we almost always lived right in the park in some of the most beautiful places in California. |
